gastro esophageal reflux, or GERD, is a disorder of the gastro-intestinal tract that also causes burning in the larynx so irritating vocal apparatus, altering his voice.
PHYSIOLOGY When we eat, food passes from the mouth to the stomach through the esophagus. Between the esophagus and the stomach is a valve. This valve opens and closes. It opens for food. It closes immediately after it has passed into the stomach.
PATHOLOGY If the valve between the esophagus and stomach is not working well, that opens when should happen to the food you eat come back.
The food and gastric juices (acid) coming back from the stomach into the esophagus.
And it is precisely the presence of acid in the esophagus that irritates the esophagus causing reflux symptoms (pain, inflammation)
Reflux is caused by different causes. It can be both a physiological and pathological conditions (ie illness). And its consequences will vary depending on the frequency with which it occurs.
It is unclear how the different factors that contribute to gastroesophageal reflux contribute to laryngeal damage. The extended pH monitoring of patients with hoarseness or a chronic cough showed abnormal acid reflux in the distal which is rather inconsistent in amount in the pharyngeal region.
In order to relieve the symptoms of reflux is necessary to follow specific and changing some eating habits, as well as the recruitment of anti-reflux.
