Speech therapy is a branch that deals with health prevention, education and rehabilitation of voice of written and oral language and communication in children and adolescents , adult and geriatric .
The word derives from the greek logos ("speech") and paideia ("education").
The professional profile of the speech therapist is defined in Ministerial Decree of 14 September 1994. The academic program includes a three-year university (bachelor's level) at the faculty of medicine and surgery within different departments (ENT and speech therapist, neuropsychiatry, neurology), following the university reform are also provided for postgraduate courses. The speech deals with people with learning disabilities foniatrici: dysphonia, dysphagia, dysarthria and atypical swallowing, cleft lip and palate , disodium (sung or recited in voice pathology), language difficulties related to deafness, stuttering , neuropsychological disorders: aphasia , apraxia, agnosia , delays in language development, phonological disorders, learning disabilities, mental retardation, attention deficit disorders, neurobehavioral disorders caused by trauma cranial cerebral pathological events, autism, dementia .
